International Foundation Year in Pakistan
One year, one Ofqual regulated UK Level 3 diploma, and a route into Year 1 of an undergraduate degree, studied on campus in Islamabad.
What Is the International Foundation Year in Pakistan?
A one-year Level 3 bridge from Matric or O-Level to a UK degree
Awarding body · NCC Education, UK
Regulated by Ofqual
The International Foundation Year in Pakistan is a one-year pre-university qualification that takes a student from Matric or O-Level up to the entry standard for Year 1 of a UK undergraduate degree. At Academic Training Hub it is delivered as the NCC Education Level 3 International Foundation Diploma for Higher Education Studies (L3IFDHES).
That is the short answer. The rest of this page covers the follow-ups a family in Karachi or Islamabad usually asks next: what you study, who is eligible, what the English requirement is, what it costs in rupees, whether IBCC recognises it, and what it leads to.
NCC Education is a UK awarding organisation based in Manchester, and the diploma is regulated by Ofqual, the qualifications regulator for England. The programme carries 120 credits, which NCC Education describes as credit-equivalent to three A levels. You study on campus in Pakistan, pay local fees, and finish holding a British qualification.
One academic year, two semesters
Full time across two semesters. NCC Education offers assessment in at least four cycles a year, so a unit that needs a resit does not usually cost you a whole academic year.
Awarded by NCC Education, UK
The certificate is issued by NCC Education in the United Kingdom and regulated by Ofqual. It is a British award, not an in-house centre certificate.
Who Is the International Foundation Year in Pakistan For?
Matric, O-Level and gap-year students heading for a UK degree
The International Foundation Year in Pakistan suits students who have finished Matric or O-Level and want a UK undergraduate degree without spending two years on A-Levels or Intermediate. It also suits students whose intermediate results fell short of direct university entry, and students returning to study after a gap.
NCC Education sets the entry requirements for the diploma:
- GCSE, IGCSE, O-Level or an equivalent qualification from your own country, passed in five subjects at grade C, 4 or equivalent, including Mathematics and English
- IELTS 4.5 or above, or an accepted equivalent, for students whose first language is not English
- Applicants without an IELTS score may sit the NCC Education Standard English Placement Test, which is free and administered by NCC Accredited Partner Centres
Equivalency for non-GCSE routes is decided case by case, and the centre must evidence that decision to NCC Education. Matric is commonly accepted on that basis. Academic Training Hub reviews your transcript and confirms eligibility in writing before you pay anything, so you find out where you stand first. You can send your results to the admissions office to start that check.
If your grades were borderline
A weak intermediate result does not end a UK application. The foundation year is assessed on the work you do this year, not on the marks you carried in with.
If you have a study gap
There is no upper age limit on the diploma and a gap year does not disqualify you. Bring your transcripts and admissions will confirm eligibility in writing.
What Do You Study on the International Foundation Year?
Core units in English, maths and research, plus electives for your degree subject
The International Foundation Year in Pakistan is worth 120 credits. Every student takes core units in English, mathematics and research skills, then chooses electives matched to the degree they intend to read. NCC Education sets the unit list centrally, so the syllabus is the same whether you study in Islamabad, Karachi or anywhere else in its network.
How many core units you take depends on your English level at entry. Students entering with an IELTS score from 4.5 up to 5.5 take four core units worth 80 credits and add 40 credits of electives. Students entering at 5.5 or above take three core units worth 60 credits and add 60 credits of electives, which buys more subject specialism. Assessment is by written examination or assignment depending on the unit.
Core units
- English for Academic Purposes
- Developing English Language Skills (for students entering between IELTS 4.5 and 5.5)
- Mathematics for University Study
- Research and Study Skills
Elective units
- Computing: Introduction to Programming with Python, Introduction to Computer Science, Digital World
- Business and economics: International Business, Introductory Accounting, Introductory Economics
- Science and further maths: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Further Mathematics for University Study
- Law, art and design: Law for University Study, Digital Art, Fine Art, Art & Design (General)
Students heading for a computing degree usually take the computing electives, which lead straight into the NCC Education Level 4 Diploma in Computing.
International Foundation Year vs A-Levels vs Intermediate: Which Route Is Faster?
One year to UK Year 1, against two years for the conventional routes
The International Foundation Year in Pakistan reaches the same entry point as A-Levels and Intermediate in half the time, one year instead of two. That saved year is the whole argument for the route, and it is also the thing families should scrutinise hardest, because the three qualifications are not interchangeable in every situation.
| Route | Length | Typical entry point | Leads to | Recognition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| International Foundation Year (NCC Education Level 3) | 1 year | Matric or O-Level, five passes including Maths and English | Year 1 of an undergraduate degree | Over 100 universities in 20+ countries, per NCC Education |
| A-Levels | 2 years | O-Level | Year 1 of an undergraduate degree | UK and Pakistani universities |
| Intermediate | 2 years | Matric | Year 1, usually with a separate English test | Pakistani universities; UK entry assessed case by case |

Where A-Levels still win: if you are aiming at a highly competitive UK course, or a subject such as medicine, A-Levels remain the safer currency with admissions tutors. Where the foundation year wins: time, total cost, and a syllabus designed specifically to carry an international student through Year 1 rather than through a school exam.
The year you save
Finishing in one year rather than two moves your degree start forward by a full academic year, and moves the start of your earning years forward with it.
The honest caveat
A foundation year is a Level 3 qualification, not a degree, and not a substitute for A-Levels on every application. Check your target university's entry requirements before you enrol.
How Do You Apply for the International Foundation Year in Pakistan?
Five steps from first enquiry to your first class
You apply directly to Academic Training Hub, not through UCAS. UCAS comes later, at the end of the foundation year, when you apply to a UK university. For applicants with documents ready, an eligibility decision normally comes back in a few working days rather than weeks.
Enquire and share your transcripts
Send your Matric or O-Level result and, if you hold one, your IELTS certificate.
Eligibility check
Admissions confirms in writing whether your qualifications meet the NCC Education criteria and whether you need the placement test.
Sit the placement test if required
The NCC Education Standard English Placement Test is free, and your result decides whether you take three or four core units.
Offer and discount assessment
Your O-Level, Matric, A-Level or Intermediate percentage is assessed against the published discount bands at the same time as your offer.
Registration and start
You are registered with NCC Education and begin classes on campus. Life at ATH covers what the campus day looks like.
What to have ready
Matric or O-Level result card, CNIC or B-Form, passport-size photographs, and an IELTS certificate if you hold one. Nothing further is needed to begin the eligibility check.
Where you study
Classes run on campus at the Islamabad campus in Gulrez Phase 2. Applicants travelling from elsewhere should ask admissions about current intake arrangements.
What Can You Study After the International Foundation Year?
Completing the NCC Education Level 3 International Foundation Diploma opens two routes. You can apply to Year 1 of an undergraduate degree abroad, or you can stay in Pakistan and continue on an NCC Education Level 4 programme, taking the UK degree route step by step from home.
NCC Education states that the L3IFDHES is recognised by over 100 universities, branch campuses, business schools and professional bodies for Year 1 entry across more than 20 countries. Each university still decides each application on its own merits, and NCC Education is explicit that admission is case by case, so treat recognition as an open door rather than a guaranteed place.
The route most students take at Academic Training Hub runs Level 3, then the NCC Level 4 Diploma in Computing, then the NCC Level 5 Diploma in Computing, then the Level 6 BSc (Hons) Computing top-up. Studied end to end, that is roughly four years in Pakistan finishing with a UK honours degree. Our guide to what a Level 6 UK degree equivalent means in Pakistan explains how the levels stack up.
If you intend to finish in the UK instead, the timing of the Graduate visa matters to the maths. GOV.UK states the Graduate visa allows two years for applications made on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months for applications made from 1 January 2027.
Why Study Here
Why do students across Pakistan choose Academic Training Hub?
Academic Training Hub exists to give students in Pakistan a UK-accredited route without relocating. Our mission and founder's vision set that out in full. Here is what it means in practice on the International Foundation Year.
✓ Fees published in full
Every figure for the 2026 to 2027 intake is on the fee structure page, including the total programme cost of PKR 761,000. You do not have to request a quote to find out what it costs.
✓ Discounts assessed at entry
Admission fee relief of 20 to 50 percent depending on your O-Level, Matric, A-Level or Intermediate percentage, plus separate first-semester relief based on your entry test result.
✓ Merit relief that continues
From the second semester onward, fee relief is recalculated against your grades each semester, so moving from Merit to Distinction moves you into a higher relief band.
✓ On-campus teaching in Islamabad
Classes run at the Islamabad campus in Gulrez Phase 2, following the same NCC Education syllabus that is set centrally for every accredited centre.
✓ One continuous pathway
Level 3 to Level 4 to Level 5 to the BSc (Hons) Computing top-up, planned as a single route rather than four unrelated admissions cycles.
✓ British award, Pakistani cost
You hold a certificate awarded by a UK organisation while paying local tuition and living at home, which removes accommodation and relocation costs entirely.
✓ Attendance that counts
A 90 percent attendance minimum applies across all ATH programmes and is tied directly to discount eligibility, so the requirement is enforced rather than nominal.
✓ Answers in writing
Eligibility, fee totals and discount banding are confirmed in writing by the admissions office before you commit to anything.
✓ IBCC and Ofqual recognised
The Level 3 diploma is regulated by Ofqual in the UK and recognised by IBCC as equivalent to HSSC in the Humanities Group, so the qualification holds up on both sides of the border.
How Much Does the International Foundation Year in Pakistan Cost?
PKR 761,000 in total for the 2026 to 2027 intake
The International Foundation Year at Academic Training Hub costs PKR 761,000 in total for the 2026 to 2027 intake. That covers admission, tuition across both semesters, the LMS fee, the annual fund and the GBP 500 awarding body registration fee, shown at PKR 190,000 using a rate of PKR 380 per GBP.
| Fee item | Amount | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Admission fee | PKR 100,000 | Charged once |
| Tuition | PKR 210,500 per semester | Two semesters, PKR 421,000 in total |
| LMS fee | PKR 25,000 | For the academic year |
| Annual fund | PKR 25,000 | Library, computer lab, maintenance and security |

| Result achieved | Relief on admission fee | You pay |
|---|---|---|
| 91 percent and above | 50 percent | PKR 50,000 |

| 55 to 80 percent | 20 percent | PKR 80,000 |

Two things to hold in mind. The rupee amount you actually transfer for the GBP 500 depends on the exchange rate on your payment date, and this fee schedule is valid from 1 May 2026 to 30 April 2027. Discount relief is assessed at admission, so the figure many students pay is lower than the published total. The full breakdown sits on the ATH fee structure page.
Discount on the admission fee
A result of 91 percent and above attracts 50 percent relief, 81 to 90 percent attracts 35 percent, and 55 to 80 percent attracts 20 percent, applied to the PKR 100,000 admission fee.
What the fee actually buys
Timetabled teaching, tutorial support and internal assessment, plus LMS access, library and computer lab use, and campus maintenance and security for the year.
Is the NCC Education Foundation Diploma Recognised in Pakistan and the UK?
Ofqual regulated in the UK, IBCC equivalent to HSSC in Pakistan
Yes on both counts, with one detail worth reading carefully. NCC Education is a UK awarding organisation and its Level 3 International Foundation Diploma for Higher Education Studies is regulated by Ofqual. In Pakistan, the Inter Boards Coordination Commission (IBCC) recognised the diploma as equivalent to HSSC in the Humanities Group.
Awarded by NCC Education, Manchester, United Kingdom. Regulated in England by Ofqual.
The detail: NCC Education's own announcement, published on 31 January 2025, states that the IBCC equivalency decision is valid for two years with the possibility of extension on fulfilling IBCC requirements. If your plan depends on IBCC equivalence for a Pakistani university admission, confirm the current status with the admissions office before you enrol rather than assuming it still stands. That caveat is on NCC Education's own page, and it is the sort of thing pathway pages tend to leave out.
NCC Education also describes the diploma's 120 credits as credit-equivalent to three A levels at 180 credits. That is a statement about credit volume, not a claim that a Level 3 diploma is treated identically to three A-Levels by every admissions officer.
Regulated in the UK
Ofqual regulates the qualification in England, which is what makes the certificate a genuine British award rather than an in-house one.
Recognised in Pakistan
IBCC equivalence to HSSC Humanities Group was granted in January 2025. Ask admissions to confirm the current position in writing before you rely on it.
International Foundation Year in Pakistan: Frequently Asked Questions
Ten questions applicants ask before they enrol
Is the International Foundation Year equivalent to A-Levels in Pakistan?
Not identically. The Inter Boards Coordination Commission recognised NCC Education's Level 3 International Foundation Diploma as equivalent to HSSC in the Humanities Group in January 2025. NCC Education separately describes the diploma's 120 credits as credit-equivalent to three A levels. For any specific Pakistani university, confirm equivalence with that university's admissions office.
What are the entry requirements for the International Foundation Year in Pakistan?
NCC Education requires GCSE, IGCSE, O-Level or an equivalent qualification with five subjects passed at grade C, 4 or equivalent, including Mathematics and English. Students whose first language is not English need IELTS 4.5 or above, or an accepted equivalent. Matric is commonly accepted as an equivalent, assessed case by case with supporting evidence.
Do I need IELTS to join the International Foundation Year?
No. Applicants without an IELTS score can sit the NCC Education Standard English Placement Test, which is free and administered by NCC Accredited Partner Centres. Your result decides your unit mix: entrants below IELTS 5.5 take four core units plus 40 credits of electives, and entrants at 5.5 or above take three core units plus 60 credits of electives.
How long is the International Foundation Year and how is it assessed?
The programme runs for one academic year across two semesters at Academic Training Hub. NCC Education offers assessment in a minimum of four cycles a year, and units are assessed by written examination or by assignment depending on the unit. A resit therefore does not usually cost a full academic year.
How much does the International Foundation Year cost in Pakistan?
The total programme cost at Academic Training Hub is PKR 761,000 for the 2026 to 2027 intake. That includes a PKR 100,000 admission fee, tuition of PKR 210,500 per semester across two semesters, a PKR 25,000 LMS fee, a PKR 25,000 annual fund, and a GBP 500 awarding body registration fee shown at PKR 190,000.
Are discounts available on the International Foundation Year?
Yes. Admission fee relief runs at 50 percent for a result of 91 percent and above, 35 percent for 81 to 90 percent, and 20 percent for 55 to 80 percent. A separate first-semester discount of 15 to 20 percent applies on Intermediate or A-Level results combined with the entry test. Relief requires 90 percent attendance.
Can I go to a UK university after the International Foundation Year?
You can apply. NCC Education states the diploma is recognised by over 100 universities, branch campuses, business schools and professional bodies for Year 1 entry in more than 20 countries. Universities decide each application on its own merits, so a place is never guaranteed. UK undergraduate applications usually go through UCAS.
Do I need a UK student visa for this programme?
Not for the foundation year itself, because you study it in Pakistan. A Student visa applies only if you later move to a UK campus. GOV.UK currently lists the Student visa fee at 558 pounds from outside the UK, with most decisions issued in around three weeks, plus the immigration healthcare surcharge.
What can I study in Pakistan after finishing the foundation year?
At Academic Training Hub the onward route is the NCC Education Level 4 Diploma in Computing, then the Level 5 Diploma in Computing, then the Level 6 BSc (Hons) Computing top-up. Studied end to end that is roughly four years in Pakistan, finishing with a UK honours degree without relocating.
Can I apply if I have a study gap or weak intermediate grades?
Yes in most cases. The diploma has no upper age limit and a gap in study does not disqualify an applicant. Borderline intermediate results are common among entrants, since the programme exists to bridge exactly that gap. Admissions reviews your transcript and confirms eligibility in writing before any payment is made.
Last reviewed: 30 July 2026. Fees, entry requirements and recognition status are checked against Academic Training Hub's published fee structure and NCC Education's qualification pages.
